Fun Classroom Writing Area Idea #1: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

This is a great time of year to clean out any copies you made and didn’t get completed. Don’t throw those away, add them to your classroom writing area (or writing center, whatever it is called in your classroom) and let the students use them!

Students can use the paper to “play school”. They can cut out and use the clipart or images on the worksheets. They can use the back sides of the page like blank paper. This is a great way to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

This would also be a great time to add your construction paper scrap box to your writing center. Students can make colorful covers for mini-books, create collages, or use the paper to write on! You will be surprised at how creative they can be.

Fun Classroom Writing Area Idea #2: Memory Books!

‘Tis the season for memories! Students can make memory books by folding a piece of paper into a mini-book and writing their memories from the school year. Before adding this option to your classroom writing area, you may want to talk with your students and list things they could include in their mini-memory book.

If you took pictures this year of fun things that you did in your classroom, you could print them and make copies to add to your writing center. Students could add them to their memory books!

Students also LOVE gathering the signatures of their classmates. Unfold the mini-book and students have a fun signature page.

Fun Classroom Writing Area Idea #3: Take it outside!

Make your classroom writing center portable and take it with you outside! Students can use a clipboard to have a writing surface. Set up a “Sunshine Scribblers Stuff” writing caddy. Add paper, pencils, crayons, and colored pencils to take outside. You may need more than one if you use it with your whole class. Students can clip their writing to their clipboards so their writing won’t blow away.

Fun Classroom Writing Area Idea #4: Postcards!

Making postcards for your classroom writing center can be super simple! Just use some cardstock (white or colored) and cut into fourths. Each fourth can be used to make a postcard.

Students can draw and color a picture on the front of the card, then use a sticker for a stamp and write a note on the back!

You could also create and print fun postcards using these fun Spring Postcard Templates in the May Writing Area Refresh Pack! This pack also includes an editable version to really make these postcards custom for your class!

Fun Classroom Writing Area Idea #5: Classmate Trading Cards!

Making classroom trading cards is a fun way to help students remember their classmates! There are many ways that you can do this.

  1. Add blank cards to your writing center and let students make trading cards of themselves for their friends. You can make these by cutting card stock into 9ths. Add the blank cards to your writing center with an example.
  2. Have students make a trading card of themselves, then make copies (on cardstock) for the rest of the class. Use a school photo on the front. Students fill out the info on the back. Ask for parents’ permission if you want your students to add any contact information (such as an e-mail address or phone number). If students add contact information, this can help them get in touch with each other over the summer months!

You can find a blank trading card template in the May Writing Center Refresh Pack. It also includes writing area templates for trading cards, postcards, and memory books to make updating your classroom writing center this May a total breeze:
