Creative Writing Exercises for April #1: Comic Strip Paper!

Image of a comic strip. Text: Add Paper: Comic Strip Paper!

Students LOVE comic strip paper. Writing a comic strip is also a great way to introduce students to writing dialog. Comic strip paper is super easy to make. In Powerpoint make a 1×3 or 1×4 table. Adjust the table until the boxes are squares. No fill, and make the borders a bit thicker. Do 2 of these and voila! Comic Strip paper! Check out this super quick video that shows you all the steps in PowerPoint to make your own comic strip paper.

Not interested in making your own? I have some fun FREE comic strip paper in my Free Resource Library! You can sign up here to get the fun freebies from this post:

Creative Writing Exercises for April #2: Add Novelty with Magnetic Poetry

Creative Writing Exercises #2: Magnet Poetry

April is poetry month! Magnet poetry is a great way to have your students write some free-verse poems! Adding magnetic poetry to your writing center will bring out the poets in your students. Add some magnet boards (I use metal burner covers for the stove .)

Make your own! Did you know you can print onto *magnet paper? Check out this video:

Don’t want to mess with magnets? You can also do “magnet poetry” digitally, or print a bunch of words for students to glue onto paper!

I have the magnetic poetry you see in the video above in my free resource library! You can print this yourself onto magnet paper or regular paper and let your students create poems by gluing the words and pictures onto another sheet of paper! Creative Writing Exercises for April #3: A Toy Story

Creative Writing Exercises #3: Add Fun with Toys!

Everyone loves toys! Let’s use some toys to make our classroom writing center irresistible! Use small containers (such as the heart containers from the February Writing Center Refresh) or the fillable Easter Eggs that are everywhere this time of year.

In the container add a small toy or two and a stamper. Students will open the container, and use the items inside to write about! They can stamp their paper with the stamper, and then write about the toys.

I also found these really *fun eggs on Amazon. They have “Lego” pieces inside to build an item. The students could open it, build the item inside, and describe the toy that they created, or, write how-to instructions on how to build it.

Beanie Babies and Action Figures also make super fun toys to add to your classroom writing center! Students can write descriptions, use them as inspiration for characters, or “act out” the action of the story to help them better write their toy stories!

Let’s update your classroom writing center this April with this fun April Writing Center Refresh Pack!
